There are so many things pulling these characters in different directions but I can come up with some ideas about what is drawing the attention of some of the main people.
Esteban: Power, Pride
Clara: Spirits, Family minus Esteban
Blanca: Alba, Pedro T. Garcia
Jaime: The indigent, Amanda
Nicolas: Himself
Amanda: Miguel
Alba: Grandpa, Grandma, Mom, Uncle Jaime, Uncle Nicolas
Pedro T. Garcia: The Cause, Music, Blanca
I know this question can go much deeper but this is a surface interpretation that I think we, as a group, can elaborate on. Can we think of why I came up with these answers? Do any of you feel the same or different?

The Nightingales of Troy
Welcome to The Nightingales of Troy...
BLOG ONE WEDNESDAY JUNE 1ST-ARYANA
First Week Team Leader Blogger Question for Discussion is,“Time is one of the book’s large themes. ‘And though my children were sleeping the sleep of the just, I half believed my unvoiced thoughts would reach them across that room full of twentieth-century light,’ Mamie thinks at the end of the first story. What do her thoughts suggest about time?”
(remember we have a week to respond, but be courteous to your team leader's prompt address of the question)
BLOG 2 WEDNESDAY JUNE 8TH-TANYA
Week 2 Team Leader Blogger Question for Discussion is,“Alice Fulton has called the past ‘the ultimate foreign country.’ The Nightingales of Troy covers a century with remarkable attention to detail. It’s full of fascinating period objects and artifacts, from cosmetics to medical equipment. How do these cultural objects and markers deepen your sense of the past?”
Meeting Wednesday, June 16th from 4-6ish in room CC3345. We will do the book vote around 5:30 pm. Those of you who cannot make it to the book vote can vote via email. I will send you packets of the selections and then you can email me back with your picks. Let me know if you are interested!

Attraction or Drive
I am stymied thinking of a response to, "what attracts the attention of the people within the story?"
All I can come up with is what drives them.
I think that for each, it is the force of his or her own time and circumstance - until something new comes along, and each is swept under or away.
Sorry if that's too general.

For those who are interested, here's Salvador Allende's last speech - complete with English subtitles, and gunshots and explosions in the background:

Speech starts at the 2:01 mark, following a collection of facts.
Also, it turns out there's a movie version of The House of the Spirits. In my honest opinion, I don't think I should ruin it by giving my honest opinion:

A Reminder Post
Welcome to the home stretch! This is the last week of book reading for Isabelle Allende's The House of the Spirits. I hope that everyone has enjoyed the story as much as I have enjoyed it. I know that this is a busy time for everyone and I wanted to say that I am just as busy. So, that being said I hope that everyone can make one last post before the meeting. I plan to make my last post this weekend because just as everyone else is, I am behind. I would like everyone to sign in for the meeting at the bottom of the blog if you intend on attending it. It will be in the same room as last time and if there is a strong fella who can show up 15 minutes early to help me move tables that would be greatly appreciated. I will be bringing a "meeting size" craft of coffee from Starbucks that comes with plenty of cups, sugar , and creamer so feel free to bring snacks too. It should be a lively discussion so I hope everyone can make it. If you cannot make it and you plan on reading the next book please email and let me know so I can put one aside for you with Aryana in the library. The format for the blog will be different for the next book and you will find out all about that when we are finished dissecting Allende's book at the meeting. Look for my final post this weekend! Happy Reading!!
